Kimberly-Clark ((KC) announced a stronger procurement standard that outlines the company’s intention to obtain its wood fibers from environmentally responsible sources to ensure that all of its wood fibers come from environmentally responsible sources. Amendment The latter policy gives priority to FSC certified wood fiber and establishes a goal for FSC certified fiber in the KC supply chain. Greenpeace, which has jointly revised the standard with Kimberly-Clark, has announced the end of nearly 5 years of opposition to this well-known tissue paper product manufacturer International movement.
Kimberly-Clark will steadily increase the proportion of wood fiber in its tissue paper products in a step-by-step manner. As of the end of 2011, FSC certified the company to ensure that 40% of its North American tissue fiber is FSC certified or recycled-from the 2007 level, an increase of more than 70%, equivalent to 600,000 tons of fiber.
"We commend Kimberly-Clark for boldly moving into the future of responsible forests and expect further changes in the global forest industry as the final result," said Andre de Freitas, Executive Director of FSC. "Congratulations to Greenpeace for its tireless work."
Moreover, by the end of 2011, Kimberly-Clark will no longer purchase any fiber from the northern forests of North America that has not been certified by the FSC. Home to endangered wild animals such as caribou, this natural forest is a sanctuary for more than 1 billion migratory birds. The company has vowed to support plans to identify, map and protect high conservation value forests (HCVFs).
Kimberly-Clark’s flagship brands include Shujie, Scott and Curious. It will also use its global purchasing power to encourage its suppliers to implement high-level social and environmental forestry standards and move towards FSC certification.
"These revised standards (from KC) are proof that responsible companies and environmental advocates get together, and the results are good for businesses and good for the planet," said Scott, director of the Greenpeace US Forest Campaign Paul said, “Kimberly’s efforts are a challenge to its competitors. I hope they will pay close attention.
